Sustainability and digitisation: How do they live together?

There is no doubt that 2020 has been hard for everyone. Companies have realised that, in these uncertain times, there are new approaches to successfully implementing their business model, especially on issues of digitisation and sustainability.

Sustainability and digitalisation are two hot concepts in our society. Together, they constitute an indispensable research field in digital transformation and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

There is plenty to discover about sustainability and the digital world, because when companies want to introduce innovation and new technologies to their businesses, sadly, they generally contribute significantly to the environmental problems facing our planet today as well.

So, how can they actually live together?

Technological progress has brought us many benefits when it comes to optimising our daily tasks, however, this continuous progress has come at a cost. Smartphones, for instance, as the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research explains, "are a small part of the world's electronic waste. In 2016, 44.7 million tons of e-waste was generated worldwide, the equivalent of nearly 4,500 Eiffel Towers. Only 20 per cent of this was recycled. That's another dimension of our digital world."

Can digitisation be a green process?

First, we must differentiate between two forms of digitisation: on the one hand, we have the acquisition of digital devices, such as smartphones or tablets.

According to The Global E-waste Monitor 2020, “a record of 53.6 million metric tonnes (Mt) of electronic waste was generated worldwide in 2019, up 21% in just five years”, which proves that this part of digitisation is not really sustainable, nor eco-friendly.

It seems that we still have a lot to learn when it comes to recycling these types of devices and thus reducing the impact that this waste has on the environment.

On the other hand, there is the development and acquisition of digital technologies or software, such as applications or modern digital platforms, that help improve a company's operating systems.

Cloud-based systems are an excellent example of this. Salesforce, the world's number one CRM platform, achieved net-zero greenhouse gas emissions globally and delivers customers a carbon-neutral cloud.

This type of digitisation is sustainable and eco-friendly, let us remind you that Salesforce enables more remote working, reducing, therefore, the need to commute to the office and the environmental impact that that activity has.

And while there is still so much to learn about these two essential topics for today's society and business community, one of the most significant advances we've seen in the digital world has been Salesforce’s introduction of its Sustainability Cloud.

Salesforce Sustainability Cloud: start implementing your environment-friendly strategy

The new Sustainability Cloud “enables businesses to quickly track, analyse and report reliable environmental data to help them reduce their carbon emissions.

A company’s carbon data is easily surfaced in Salesforce Einstein Analytics, which creates dynamic reports and dashboards—both for audit purposes and for executive engagement—with insights that empower businesses to drive climate action programs at scale”, says Salesforce.

With this new product, Salesforce calls on companies to empower their businesses to actively contribute to climate change while offering an innovative and sustainable solution.

This new Cloud solution is an empirical example of how sustainability and digitalisation can live together. When these two concepts are well-defined and carried out under the premise of best practices, they can bring enormous benefits to any business, as well as helping to achieve the company's sustainable goals.

Achieving your company's sustainable goals is no longer difficult with Sustainability Cloud, and we encourage you to start considering its implementation for your company. With this new Salesforce solution, you have everything you need to measure and track your company's environmental impact.
